Repairing the Windshield is Affordable, Easy and Economical
Repairing a cracked or chipped windshield is affordable and does not require a hefty insurance payment. It’s always better to take the car to an expert to get tiny cracks repaired before they turn into larger cracks that could mean replacing the entire unit.
How is the Damage Repaired?
The repair expert will need to consider specific factors before replacing the windshield. The technician will try to repair it if the damage is minor. Repairing the damaged auto glass usually takes around 30 minutes or more on average.
The timings of the repairs depend heavily on the size and extent of damage to the auto glass. The time needed to repair it depends on the depth of the crack and chip, and if the chip has accumulated dust, the expert will clear out the dust before the repair. Specialized vacuum is used to clear out dust from chips and cracks.
After cleaning the area and the cracks thoroughly, a technician uses a windshield repair injector, which attaches to the glass, surrounded by the damaged area. In the second step, the windshield is injected with a transparent, curable resin into the outermost glass layer.
The transparent resin helps to restore the strength of the auto glass along with enhancing the appearance of the glass. For durability, the resin is polished and cured; the resin polish leaves the surface smooth and soft. The polished resin helps restrain the chip from spreading and causing further damage.
If the crack is thick enough to damage the Poly-Vinyl Butyral (PVB) layer, then the chip will be deepened using a drill to make the hole smooth. This procedure is useful in allowing the resin to reach the broader intermediate layer of the PVB.
When the process of repairing the cracked windshield is complete, the excess resin is removed using a unique UV light. The light helps harden the resin securing the damaged part of the auto glass.
