Not all cracks and chips are similar, they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and can be a nightmare for the car owners. Some cracks are too big for repair, they require expert services that could be very pricey. Depending on the size of the crack it’s always better to replace it with a new unit.

Some cracks and chipped windows of the car are possible to repair, but if the cracks are wide and larger than 6 inches, then the better option is to replace the car window. It’s considered too late for repairs when the more significant cracks exceeding the 6 inches size threshold continue to grow, and eventually, the whole window could collapse even at the slightest pressure or vibration.

Safety is the main reason behind the need to repair or replace the broken car windows. Therefore, improving the damage is not for the better appearance of the car, but the main reason is to make the car safe for everyone.

Observe the Chip

When considering the extent of the damage to the car windows, take a closer look at the crack or the chip on the window. The location of the chip or crack will indicate the extent of the damage. If the damage is extensive and it’s placed right across the driver’s line of vision, then the chip is too big for repairs and must be replaced urgently. Below are the different types of damage to car windows:

Bullseye

The bullseye is a type of window crack that is visible by a separated cone located on the outer glass layer. Upon impact with the glass, it causes a dark circle to appear on the glass. The bullseye is repairable if the diameter is about an inch or smaller. It must not have any dirt, and it must not be located in the driver’s line of vision.

The Combination Break

The combination break is a unique type of car window damage. It has multiple characteristics; it begins with a bullseye,it could be short or long, and it stems from the damage. This type of car window damage can be repaired if the diameter of the damage is small, i.e., it must not exceed two inches.

A Crack in the Window

The window crack is a tiny line of separation that could start from the point of impact. A crack is repairable is it’s smaller than 6 inches, anything bigger than that requires replacement.

The Star Break

The star break has a series of legs that stem from the point of impact. This type of car window damage is repairable if the diameter of the star break is not more than three inches. It must not be in the direct line of vision.
